Toshiko becomes devoted to the Christian church so is disowned by her Buddhist parents. Morio is the oldest child of an original house and a childhood friend, so isn’t the husband Toshiko daydreamed about. Mori was an apprentice tailor and had to be patient in his work. Morio’s father and older brother had shown extraordinary dissipation and have to hand over to others the house– so people speculated they wanted to do the marriage quickly. A relative came back from his service for the wedding but had tuberculosis, died on the wedding day and was enshrined. The aunts wanted to go on with the wedding. It was torture to see people waiting on the embankment.
Mori went home a little ahead and then fetched his new wife who was crying. In her new home she would earnestly wait for his return. He persuaded her to go out they saw the train to Hiroshima and heard its steam whistle. Toshiko was still timid but went down to the port to see the ships put in at the side of the land and at the pier. She began to get a glimpse of the world and would start to wander around. It was as if the interference and supression she had suffered kept under a lid lifted off.
Toshiko had the first baby but it was a breach birth and the baby did not make a new born’s cry so the midwife slapped its bottom.
Toshiko is taking the children in a pram when she sees Christian missionaries. They go to a tent with a light inside and she asks to repent from her sins, and begs to God. It leaves a strong impression on her. Church is a place to heal people who worry. When she was taught Buddhism by her parents she learnt that when she would die she would go to hell and this fear could not be wiped away.
